Veteran hell-raiser Alice Cooper gave quirky songstress Lady Gaga his stamp of approval on the sidelines of the 52nd Grammy Awards.

The 61-year-old former wild man said the New York singer - famous for her wacky costumes and outfits - had shown in her duet with Elton John that she was a talented performer.

"I think anybody that takes it as Vaudevillian as she does is okay with me," Cooper told reporters backstage at Sunday's Grammy Awards.

"Lady Gaga sang with Elton John on piano tonight and nailed it. I think she proved her point that she's not just a costume freak. She's going to be around for a long time."

Cooper had earlier joined Katy Perry to present the Rock Album of the Year award to US band Green Day.
